Teaching a 2 year old the Easter story.

George is only 2, not quite 3 years old and at the moment all he knows about Easter is he gets Easter eggs and hot cross buns and goes to church, this is not how I want him to think of Easter.  It’s like thinking Christmas is just presents.
But how to you teach a 2 year old about Easter?  Especially if they’ve never known death, as that’s not a concept you really want to teach until they’re ready for it and I don’t believe my 2 year old is ready to know about death yet.
Christmas was easy, just told him it was Jesus Birthday, he knew what a birthday was and knew who Jesus was so the only thing we had to explain was why we get presents instead of giving them all to Jesus (and then at the next birthday which was his poppa’s we had to explain that we didn’t get presents then)
Easter is so much harder but I believe so much more important.  The belief that Jesus died on the cross for our sins and was resurrected is something my family follows and is something I want to teach my children.
So what did I do but google for an age appropriate Easter story, no luck there but there were some articles on what to tell your children... all older than George though.  The key part is to tell the whole story, the ending is the most important bit, Jesus resurrecting and then ascending into heaven, don’t just leave it at the dying for our sins bit.  Kids need happy endings.
Yesterday morning we went to the Good Friday church service where i had a quick chat to our minister for some advice, her suggestion is to say that the disciples were sad as they thought Jesus had left them forever but Jesus came back and they were happy again.  Very very basic but it is a concept that my 2 year old does understand.
